Precious Sunlight

Whenever I see an empty balcony, devoid of plants, or a plot of land lying waste or overgrown with nothing but grasses, I can’t help but feel how such precious sunlight is wasted on those places where there is no one to grow a plant or two. I positively feel depressed some times seeing such beautiful golden sunshine falling on places where there is no greenery.

Now if I could get such a place where sunshine falls abundant – I would plop down deep pots and planters and large grow bags filled with fragrant local red soil or muddy brown soil (depending on where I am) mixed with compost, perlite and a dash of sand. I would fill all of the planters and bag till two-third and then whip my seedling trays out or buy seedlings from roadside sellers (again depending on where I am). What would I grow? Oh the delicious possibilities of growing things! I could grow tomatoes, brinjal or chilies, or if it’s winter I could grow carrots, radishes and load of spinach. There’s always room for mint, basil, dill. I would love to grow potatoes, beetroot and turnips or I could try with the vine crops of gourds, pumpkins and all. If only I could, then I would – with all my heart.

Right now, we live in an apartment with no access to private balcony, let alone one with sunshine. But, we intend to change that because not only sunshine is important, plants are too – and I particularly love crop plants that you’d harvest freshly and enjoy its sweetness – both the flavour and the satisfaction.
