A burst of happiness

If there is one thing that guarantees a beautiful start to a day, it is meeting a lively host of sparrows hopping and chirruping in your verandah. I had not seen House Sparrows for quite some time, so to stop and observe their antics was refreshing, a warm flow of energy as good as gulping down a hot cup of tea on a cold November evening. It was a family day out for the birds and more likely than not, it was the juvenile’s first day of flight and freedom considering how bold (or rather naive) and chirrup-y it was as if everything was a discovery and needed to be talked about in great details to be understood. The parents were equally loquacious with their appreciations and encouragements for the little one to keep trying to fly no matter how hard it seemed at first. As for me, a chance encounter with those little birds was a great motivation and God-sent inspiration on a day when I needed it. I watched them for as long as I could and when it was time to go, I kept turning back as if I was leaving behind something very precious, something that might or might not come back to me. Considering the bend at which natural world is standing with the burden of climate change and environmental degradation, the sparrows are in continuous decline, their number steadily plummeting. It feels as if there is something intrinsically wrong with how we, humans, are moving on in the world, taking Nature for granted as if the world around us is not crumbling down, falling apart, little by little, sparrow by sparrow.
